A brief on the Marg prison visit

The joint delegation of the Arab Organization for Human Rights (AOHR) undertook the first of its planned visits to observe the situation in Egyptian prisons, and that was a visit to Al Marg prison in Northern Cairo on Monday the 16th of December, 2019. The visit went on for 3 hours and it included a meeting with the Assistant Minister of Interior for the Prison Authority and leading members of the Human Rights department of the Ministry of Interior. The discussions included some of the sources of concern circulated on the situation in Egyptian prisons and places of custody, as well as the observation of Al Marg Prison’s facilities and meetings with the inmates to examine their living conditions and the rehabilitation and reintegration programs designed for them.
This visit came in response to a request submitted by AOHR in October 2019, and AOHR suggested 5 prisons to visit on the first stage of the program and AOHR looks forward to further expand it. AOHR received approval from the authorities on the 9th of December, 2019 and then proceeded to request the implementation of the first visit on Monday the 16th of December 2019 after the national forum on reforming the penal code took place.
