30/11/2021

Beirut (30 November 2021)- A conference on “Combating incitement to hatred and promoting tolerance in the Arab region” organized by the UN Human Rights – Regional Office for the Middle East and North Africa (OHCHR-MENA) and the Arab Organization for Human Rights (AOHR), will be held virtually on Thursday, 2 December 2021. The online conference will bring together human rights experts and defenders, civil society leaders, legislators, media professionals, and religious leaders from 14 countries in the Arab region. It will examine the international human rights framework to combat incitement to discrimination, hostility and violence, with a focus on treating the root causes of hate speech.

Intolerance is being observed around the world, threatening democratic values, social stability and peace.

The Arab region has equally witnessed the spread of discrimination and intolerance, which has led to several social and political conflicts in recent years. Today, armed conflicts affect one third of the region’s population. In this context, regional and national human rights organizations are joining hands to support the United Nations efforts to counter hate speech. This conference will further explore the Rabat Plan of Action, which stresses the collective responsibility of public officials, religious and community leaders, the media and individuals to nurture social consciousness, tolerance, mutual respect, and intercultural dialogue to prevent incitement to hatred.

The conference will be live streamed on Facebook,

2 December 2021, 11 a.m. Beirut time.
